Clay County Sheriff's Office
News Release
February 10, 2016

A Tuesday afternoon pursuit which began in Clay County and ended in Emmet County, lands a Milford man in the Clay County jail. Robert Merle Hurd, 52, 906 Q Avenue, Milford was taken into custody approximately three miles NE of Terrill, after leading officers on a 30-mile pursuit.

“Our Deputy initiated a traffic stop resulting in a pursuit lasting approximately 22 minutes. The driver was secured, no injuries were sustained and no damage was sustained by any patrol vehicles. This pursuit involved officers from eight agencies and to have it come to an uneventful end is fantastic. The communication between all officers and our Communications Center was excellent and I could not be more pleased with the outcome”, said Clay County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Brad Hawley.

At approximately 12:40pm, a Clay County Deputy traveling on Hwy 18, turned to investigate a suspicious white Dodge Grand Caravan when the driver, later identified as Hurd, turned onto a gravel road and accelerated in an attempt to elude the Deputy. The Deputy pursued Hurd north through Clay County, entered Dickinson County traveling north and east before entering Emmet County, at speeds in excess of 100 mph. Tire deflation devices were deployed on two separate occasions, causing both front tires to deflate completely. When the van became disabled, Hurd was taken into custody without incident.

Hurd was transported to the Clay County jail, charged with Eluding, an aggravated misdemeanor; Speed; Failure to yield to an emergency vehicle; Reckless driving; Careless driving; Failure to obey stop sign (3 counts); Passing in no-passing zone; No insurance; Unsafe turn (2 counts) and Failure to carry registration, all simple misdemeanors. Hurd was held in the Clay County jail on $2000 bond or surety and additional charges are possible in Dickinson and Emmet Counties.

The Clay County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Iowa State Patrol, Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement, Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation, Arnold’s Park and Spencer Police Departments and the Dickinson and Emmet County Sheriff’s Offices.

"A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty."

A traffic stop by the Clay County Sheriff's Office leads to the arrest of a Sheldon man on narcotic and traffic charges.

On Saturday, January 23rd, at approximately 11:30pm, Marquis Deishun Williams, 19, 313 ½ 9th Street, Sheldon, was stopped by the Clay County Sheriff's Office for a traffic violation. After making contact with Williams, a check of his driver’s license revealed he was wanted on four arrest warrants in O’Brien County. Williams was taken into custody and a search of his person turned up a quantity of marijuana. As the investigation continued, a search was made of William’s vehicle where an approximately 45 grams of additional marijuana was found.

Williams was transported to the Clay County jail, charged with failure to affix a drug tax stamp, a Class D felony, Possession of Controlled Substance-marijuana, a serious misdemeanor, operation without registration and no insurance, each a simple misdemeanor. Williams was held in the Clay County jail on a $5000 bond for Clay County charges and $10,000 bond on O’Brien County charges.

“This is another example of what can come from active patrol. A relatively simple traffic stop leads to the arrest of someone involved in the transport of illegal narcotics”, said Clay County Sheriff's Office Chief Deputy Brad Hawley.

"A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty."

As the driver continued southbound, the Deputy activated his siren but the driver continued to be non-compliant, turning west into O’Brien County on 360th Street. The pursuit continued for approximately 11 miles in O’Brien County and ended when a tire deflation device was deployed by the O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office.
The driver, Madison Selzer, 28, 455 5th St. S.E., Primghar, Iowa, was placed under arrest and taken into custody without further incident.
