Details of Arrest: On 8-22-10 at approximately 1300 hours, it was discovered that Richard Allen Thomas was driving while under suspension. During a consent search of Thomas's vehicle, drug paraphernalia was found. Thomas was arrested and taken to the Clay County jail, where he was charged with driving while license suspended and possession of drug paraphernalia. The Clay County Sheriff's Office was assisted by the Spencer Police Department.

Details of Arrest: A Clay County Deputy initiated a traffic stop on a vehicle and upon investigation, it was found that the juvenile male had drug paraphernalia in his vehicle. The juvenile male was taken into custody and upon further investigation, a small quantity of marijuana was found in the vehicle. The juvenile male was transported to the Clay County Jail and was later cited into juvenile court for P.C.S.-Marijuana, a Serious Misdemeanor, and for Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, a Simple Misdemeanor, and was then released to the custody of his father.

Details of Arrest: A Clay County Deputy made a traffic stop on a vehicle in the 4100 Blk of Hwy 71. During the stop the deputy learned that the male driver had given him a false name and date of birth. The Deputy identified the driver as Tanner Ewing of Duncombe, IA. Ewing had given the deputy his brothers name since, Ewing did not have a valid license. Ewing was then found in possession of a controlled substance. A search of Ewing’s vehicle by the Deputy turned up a prescription pill bottle with medication that was not prescribed to Ewing. Ewing was then transported to the Clay County jail where he was held on a $1000 bond. Ewing had two juvenile passengers who were released to a parent. One of the females was charged with possession of tobacco.

Bill Fuller: Fractured pelvis, broken hand, and broken foot.

ACCIDENT DETAILS

Bill Fuller was driving a Honda Goldwing westbound in the 3100 mile of Highway 18. Fuller attempted to pass Dennis Christensen, who was driving a tractor pulling a grain wagon. As Fuller was attempting to pass, the tractor began making a signalled left turn into a field drive. The motorcycle struck the front drivers side tire of the tractor, causing the motorcycle to lose control. Fuller was transported to the Spencer hospital were he is being treated for a fractured pelvis and other injuries. Clay County Deputies were assisted by Spencer hospital, Dickens Fire and Rescue, and Palo Alto County Sheriff's Office.

Details of Arrest: In a cooperative investigation with the Spencer Police Department, the Clay County Sheriffs Office arrested Eric Lynn Davis for Theft of a John Deere Lawn Tractor model X304.
After receiving information that Eric Lynn Davis may have been involved in some area burglaries, the Spencer Police Department contacted the Sheriffs Office and, an investigation was started into the complaint, and later resulting in the arrest of Eric Lynn Davis for 2nd Degree Theft.
Area Sheriffs Offices have been contacted in an attempt to locate and verify other pieces of equipment and their rightful owners. Other charges are pending against Eric Lynn Davis from area law enforcement agencies.

Approximately 7:30pm, Monday, August 16th, the Clay County Sheriff's Office received notification of a small aircraft that had landed in a bean field in Clay County, approximately three miles east of Spencer.

Upon arrival, the Clay County deputy found an ultra-light aircraft in a field just east of 2550 350th Street. Contact was made with the pilot, Charles Jones, 77, of Spencer, who advised he was forced to land due to engine failure of his aircraft. Jones reported no injuries and the ultra-light appeared to have sustained no damage.

Jones faces no sanctions as his aircraft is not regulated by the Federal Aviation Administration and no investigation is anticipated.

The Deputy noticed that Holst was very intoxicated and had him walk down from the Ranch to the Communtiy Center and met him there. The Deputy then asked Holst a few times to step in front of his car to perform some sobriety tests but Holst was unwilling. Holst was then placed under arrest and was transported to the Clay County Jail w/o incident. Holst was charged with Public Intoxication, a Simple Misdemeanor.

ACCIDENT DETAILS
Adams was traveling west in the 2700 Block of 390th St. when her vehicle left the roadway and entered the south ditch.  Upon entering the south ditch Adam's vehicle rolled multiple times causing Adams to be ejected from the vehicle.  The vehicle came to rest upright in the south ditch.  Adams was transported to the Spencer Hospital and later passed away.  The accident is currently under investigation by the Clay Co. Sheriff Office and the Iowa State Patrol.

INJURIES
THE DRIVER OF UNIT 1 AND THE PASSENGER, SKYLOR MATTEW RICE WAS TAKEN TO THE SPENCER HOSPITAL BY AMBULANCE WITH INJURIES. SKYLOR WAS LATER FLOWN TO A SIOUX FALLS HOSPITAL FOR FURTHER EVALUATION. THE DRIVER OF UNIT 2 HAD NO INJURIES AT THE SCENE.

ACCIDENT DETAILS
THE SEMI TRACTOR AND TRAILER WAS STOPPED ON HWY 18 TO TURN NORTH TO GO INTO DICKENS. THE DRIVER OF UNIT 2 WAS DISTRACTED TRYING TO GET THE CRUISE CONTROL ENGAGED ON HIS VEHICLE, AND WHEN HE LOOKED UP HE SAW THE TRUCK STOPPED. HE HIT HIS BRAKES TO TRY TO PREVENT THEM FROM RUNNING INTO THE BACK OF THE SEMI TRACTOR TRAILER, BUT IT WAS TOO LATE. THE IMPACT OF THE CRASH CAUSED THE TRUCKS CAB TO BE SHEARED BACK INTO THE PASSENGER COMPARTMENT. THE PASSENGER HAD TO BE EXTRICATED BY DICKEN'S FIRE AND RESCUE AT THE SCENE. BOTH PARTIES WAS TAKEN TO THE SPENCER HOSPITAL BY THE AMBULANCE. ALTHOUGH THE INJURIES TO BOTH SUBJECTS DID NOT SEEM LIFE THREATENING, THE PASSENGER WAS LIFE FLIGHTED TO SIOUX FALLS FOR FURTHER EVALUATION. BOTH PARTIES ADMITTED TO LAW ENFORCEMENT THAT THEY WERE NOT WEARING THEIR SEAT BELTS. THE CLAY COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE WAS ASSISTED BY THE IOWA STATE PATROL, IOWA DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLE ENFORCEMENT, DICKENS FIRE AND RESCUE, SPENCER FIRE AND RESCUE, SPENCER EMERGENCY HOSPITAL STAFF, AND THE CLAY COUNTY DISPATCHERS.

The Deputy made contact with this subject and told her that she was no longer welcome and had her step outside where she was placed under arrest for Criminal Trespassing. The female was transported to the Clay County Jail w/o incident and was then identified as Chris Ross. Ross was charged with Criminal Trespass, a Simple Misdemeanor.

Details of Arrest: A Clay County Deputy initiated a traffic stop with having prior knowledge that the registered owner, Lorena Mendez-Maza, didn't have a drivers license. Upon making contact with the driver, it was found that Lorena Mendez-Maza was driving. Upon further investigation, it was found that Mendez-Maza was under suspension. Mendez-Maza was placed under arrest and was transported to the Clay County Jail w/o incident. Mendez-Maza was charged with Driving Under Suspension, a Simple Misdemeanor and was later released on a $300 cash only bond.
