News Release
January 15, 2015

Two Polk County residents are in the Clay County jail following their arrests on multiple charges following a joint investigation by the Clay County Sheriff's Office and the Iowa Division of Narcotics Enforcement. Arrested were Sherry Lynn Dawson, 44, and Michael Scott Weckman, 43, both of 6221 SE 5th Street, #81, Des Moines.

Suspicious activity Tuesday morning in the area of the Days Inn, Spencer, led officers to initiate an investigation which revealed Dawson was wanted in Polk County on a charge of driving while barred. As the investigation continued and additional information was gained, the couple was approached as they rummaged through recycling material in the Wal-Mart parking lot. Dawson and Weckman were identified and a warrant check on Weckman revealed he was also wanted in Polk County for felony parole violation, on an original charge of Theft-1st degree. The warrants were confirmed and each was placed under arrest.

When arrested, Dawson was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia and it was learned Weckman was driving on a revoked license. Each was secured and taken into custody without incident. As the officers continued to verify Dawson and Weckman's activity, it was determined they were responsible for damage to property within the hotel room they had occupied, and an inventory of their vehicle led to the discovery of additional drug paraphernalia, a quantity of marijuana, property which is believed to be stolen and the possession of multiple tools believed to be used in thefts or burglaries.

Dawson and Weckman were transported to the Clay County jail, processed and held. Each are charged with possession of burglary tools, criminal mischief -3rd degree and theft-5th degree. In addition, Dawson is charged with Possession of Controlled Substance-Marijuana and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (2 counts), while Weckman faces an additional charge of driving while revoked.

Both Dawson and Weckman are held on $2000 bond for charges in Clay County and each has a no bond warrant from Polk. They will be held in the Clay County jail pending their appearance before the Court and subsequent transport to Polk County.

"A criminal charge is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty."
